Break Up (Student Work)

Designed by Frauke Mester, Germany.

„It it not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent;
it is the one that is most adaptable to change.“

Charles Darwin 1859

The quote is not only applicable to nature, but also to packaging design, which is how it inspired me to my project. Due to changing consumer demands, packaging has to adapt to these changes in order to stay competitive. To optimize the use of space and material we can also adapt the product to the package. This idea shows that if cornflakes were produced in sheets they would save a lot of space. The sheets can be crumbled into flakes, but also be enjoyed as a snack on the way.
The package can be ripped up and customized in size as sheets are being used, therefore the box only takes up as much space as the content left inside. During the production of the package, almost no material is wasted, since the shapes that are cut out are geometric and fit perfectly together leaving nearly no space between them.

The packaging was designed by Frauke Mester from Hamburg, Germany as part of her MA project about space saving packaging in Digital and Visual Communication at the University of Wolverhampton, England.
