Brief
PIDA, packaging impact design awards, is a competition arranged by BillerudKorsnäs.

Following text is taken from BillerudKorsnäs page, and this was the challenge in this years competition; "Create a smart, futuristic and functional package for the premium electronic segment – using a fictitious brand – and eliminate the plastic boxes.

Create a marketing concept and marketing plan of your fictitious brand, with focus on staying connected and creating interactivity with the package using a new, up-and-coming technology. Include the different features, and how you can interact, in your market plan. Use BillerudKorsnäs overall message “We challenge conventional packaging for a sustainable future” to build your case."

Solution

We created a package to a meat thermometer with both high technological and heat sensitive ink. We came up with a fictive brand called "Svartsjö". Svartsjö is a quite anonymously place in Sweden, and we thought the name fit our concept. Our target group is the middle age man who love all new and smart technological solutions. You know, that person, who has a bigger interest in the golf watch, than the sport itself?

The package
We created a clean package, with a pattern of a chart of the Svartsjö area. We invented what we call a "secuesleeve"(secure & sleeve), to protect the packaging, and eliminate the plastic bag while carrying it home. It can also tell you if the package has been opened. After the secuesleeve has been removed, you can store your thermometer in the package, placed in the kitchen as an interior detail.

Heat sensitive ink
Inside of the package, there are directions to how to cook your meet, and also a heat sensitive ink that will tell you when your frying pan has the perfect heat. Just hold the package over the the frying pan, and a red symbol will show when the temperature is perfect.

Interaction
To give the costumers something special, we created an application that talks to the thermometer. You just take your package and drag it against the surface of your iPad or smartphone. Since there is high technological ink printed inside of the package, you will automatically get access to the Svartsjö application. You can choose to use the thermometer straight away, work with a recipe or get some cooking tips.
