For Bastardo Organic Tequila Liqueur (123 Spirits, USA & Mexico), we designed a completely sustainable packaging design, where all items are individually sustainable. Bottle, labels, ink, glue etc. All parts are sustainable. Even the artwork on the labels is created by hand, wood carvings, to stipulate the complete sustainability. This all has been done to translate the Organically produced spirit, but also to communicate the brand story, craftmanship and cultural heritage to the consumer through the packaging design.
The bottles are handblown from 100% recycled glass. Furthermore, the labels are produced from recycled paper, are printed with soy-based inks and glued to the bottles using vegetable-based glue; to top it off, wooden caps with natural cork are used.
The graphic design process of the labels itself continues with this sustainable story. The artwork was hand carved into wood and this wood carving was then used as a base for the print work. To give the label a real hand carved feeling, the carvings where embossed into the label. The artwork is honoring century old Mexican believes and traditions, indulging in an affair of the agave heart, based on a myth about the forbidden love between gods.
