Italians have been using stone furnace ovens to bake bread for centuries with many being found in Roman ruins by archaeologists and more than thirty brick ovens being discovered in the ancient ruins of Pompeii.
This piece of packaging aims to pay homage to the old baking method while also spicing up the typically mundane breadstick shelf of the supermarket.
The plaque on the side of the box was constructed using an old, chiselled typeface called, Alfabeto Delle Mainscole Romane that I found in an old sculptors book. I then scanned it in and pieced together digitally to form the final design.
What's Unique?
The packaging replicates the actual mechanics of the oven. The opening mechanism is a little tab that sticks out from the top of the box. When pulled it opens the door which acts as a baking peel as it slides out, present the breadsticks to the consumer.
